Wastegate Fooler for 5.9 Cummins 2004.5-2007 | Aftermarket Turbo Check Engine Light Fix

The Diesel Power Source® Wastegate Fooler for 2004.5-2007 Dodge Ram 5.9L Cummins trucks eliminates the check engine light and derate conditions that occur when replacing the factory turbo with an aftermarket turbocharger. This plug-in device connects directly to the factory wiring harness where the stock turbo's electronic wastegate solenoid was plugged in, mimicking the OEM signal so the ECM does not detect a missing connection. No cutting, splicing, or wiring modifications needed.

Starting in mid-2004, Dodge added an electronic wastegate solenoid to the factory turbo on 3rd gen 5.9 Cummins trucks. When you remove that factory turbo and install an aftermarket S300, compound kit, or any other non-OEM turbo that does not use the factory electronic wastegate, the ECM detects the missing connection and triggers a check engine light. In some cases, it will also command a derate condition that limits power. The wastegate fooler solves this by plugging into the factory harness and providing the signal the ECM expects, allowing your aftermarket turbo to operate without fault codes or power restrictions.

Why You Need This

On 2004.5-2007 5.9 Cummins trucks, the factory ECM monitors the electronic wastegate solenoid connection on the turbocharger. The ECM uses boost sensor feedback calibrated for the stock turbo to determine when to open and close the wastegate. When you install a larger aftermarket S300 turbo that builds boost at different pressure thresholds than the stock turbo, the ECM can command the wastegate to open prematurely, limiting boost before the turbo reaches its efficient operating range.

The wastegate fooler adjusts the signal to the wastegate solenoid so the ECM allows the turbo to build full boost without premature wastegate opening. On 2003 through early 2004 trucks, the factory turbo uses a mechanical wastegate with no electronic solenoid, so the fooler is not needed.

Do I Need a Wastegate Fooler?

Truck Year Factory Wastegate Type Fooler Required?
2003 to early 2004 Mechanical (no electronic solenoid) No
Mid-2004 (2004.5) to 2007 Electronic solenoid Yes, when running aftermarket turbo

Not sure which wastegate your truck has? Look at the factory turbo. If it has a wiring connector plugged into the wastegate actuator, your truck has the electronic version and needs this fooler when running an aftermarket turbo. If the wastegate actuator has no wiring connector, you have the mechanical version and do not need the fooler.

Installation

  1. Unplug the factory wastegate connector from the stock turbo
  2. Plug the DPS wastegate fooler into the factory wiring harness connector
  3. Install your aftermarket turbo

That's it. No cutting, splicing, or wiring modifications. The fooler plugs directly into the factory harness.

Key Features

  • Eliminates Check Engine Light — Prevents fault codes caused by missing factory wastegate solenoid connection
  • Prevents Derate Conditions — Allows full power when running an aftermarket turbo
  • Direct Plug-In — Connects to the factory wiring harness with no cutting, splicing, or modifications
  • Required for 2004.5-2007 Trucks — Any 3rd gen truck with the electronic wastegate solenoid needs this when running an aftermarket turbo
  • Works with All Aftermarket Turbos — DPS S300 single turbos, compound kits, add-a-turbo kits, and any other non-OEM turbo
  • Simple Installation — Unplug old connector, plug in fooler, install turbo

Fitment

This wastegate fooler fits mid-2004 (2004.5) through 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks with the 5.9L common rail Cummins engine that have the factory electronic wastegate solenoid.

Does NOT apply to 2003 through early 2004 trucks. These trucks use a mechanical wastegate with no electronic solenoid and do not require a fooler.

Does NOT apply to 2007.5+ 6.7L Cummins trucks. The 6.7 uses a completely different VGT turbo system.

Frequently Asked Questions

If your truck was built from mid-2004 (commonly referred to as 2004.5) through 2007 and you are installing an aftermarket turbo that does not use the factory electronic wastegate solenoid, yes. The factory ECM will detect the missing solenoid connection and trigger a check engine light. In some cases it will also command a derate condition that limits power. 2003 through early 2004 trucks use a mechanical wastegate and do not need a fooler.

Look at the wastegate actuator on your factory turbo. If it has a wiring connector plugged into it, you have the electronic version (2004.5-2007) and need the fooler when running an aftermarket turbo. If there is no wiring connector on the wastegate actuator, you have the mechanical version (2003 to early 2004) and do not need the fooler.

The fooler plugs directly into the factory wiring harness connector where the stock turbo's electronic wastegate solenoid was connected. Unplug the factory connector from the stock turbo, plug the fooler into the harness, and install your aftermarket turbo. No cutting, splicing, or wiring modifications are needed.

Yes. The wastegate fooler works with any aftermarket turbo that does not use the factory electronic wastegate solenoid, including DPS S300 single turbos, compound turbo kits, add-a-turbo kits, and turbos from other manufacturers.

The ECM will detect the missing wastegate solenoid connection and trigger a check engine light. Depending on the specific fault code, the ECM may also command a derate condition that limits engine power. The fooler prevents both of these by providing the signal the ECM expects to see.

On 2004.5-2007 trucks, the factory ECM commands the electronic wastegate based on boost sensor feedback calibrated for the stock turbo. With a larger aftermarket turbo that builds boost at different pressure thresholds, the ECM can command the wastegate to open prematurely, limiting boost before the turbo reaches its efficient range. The fooler adjusts the signal to the wastegate solenoid circuit so the ECM allows the turbo to build full boost without premature opening or fault codes.

No. The 2007.5+ 6.7L Cummins uses a completely different variable geometry turbo (VGT) system. The wastegate fooler is only for 2004.5-2007 5.9L Cummins trucks with the electronic wastegate solenoid on the factory HE351CW turbo.
