Non-Intercooled Turbo Adapter Kit for 1989 to 1991.5 Dodge Cummins | 1st Gen 5.9L 12V
The Diesel Power Source® Non-Intercooled Turbo Adapter Kit allows you to install a DPS S300 aftermarket turbo on 1989 to 1991.5 Dodge Ram trucks that were not equipped with a factory intercooler. This kit includes a billet aluminum barb adapter and V-band clamp that connect the turbo's compressor outlet to the factory non-intercooled intake plumbing, giving early 1st gen trucks a clean, direct connection to any DPS S300 turbo without modification or fabrication.
Dodge began equipping 1st gen Cummins trucks with an intercooler starting in mid-1991 (commonly referred to as the 1991.5 model year). Trucks built before that point route compressed air directly from the turbo to the intake manifold through a rubber hose with no intercooler in between. This adapter bridges the difference between the DPS S300 compressor outlet and the factory non-intercooled intake connection so the turbo bolts in cleanly on these earlier trucks.
1991.5 to 1998 trucks with a factory intercooler do not need this adapter. The standard DPS S300 turbo kit connects directly to the intercooled plumbing on those trucks.
What's Included
- Billet aluminum barb adapter (2.5" barb to 2.875" V-band)
- V-band clamp
Key Features
- Fits All DPS S300 Turbo Stages for the 12V Cummins platform (Stages 1.5 through 9.5)
- Billet Aluminum Construction for durability and precision fit
- V-Band Connection for a secure, leak-free seal at the turbo compressor outlet
- Barb Fitting presses into the factory non-intercooled intake hose for a tight connection
- Solves the 1st Gen Non-Intercooled Fitment Gap that prevents direct S300 installation on 1989 to 1991.5 trucks
- No Fabrication Required
Do I Need This Adapter?
Dodge 1st gen Cummins trucks were produced in two intake configurations:
- 1989 to mid-1991 (non-intercooled): Compressed air from the turbo routes directly to the intake manifold through a rubber hose. No intercooler. These trucks need this adapter to install a DPS S300 turbo.
- Mid-1991 (1991.5) to 1998 (intercooled): Compressed air routes from the turbo through an intercooler before reaching the intake manifold. These trucks do NOT need this adapter. The DPS S300 turbo connects directly to the intercooled plumbing.
If you are unsure whether your truck has a factory intercooler, look for an intercooler (air-to-air heat exchanger) mounted in front of the radiator with aluminum piping running from the turbo to the intercooler and from the intercooler to the intake. If there is no intercooler, your truck is a non-intercooled model and you need this adapter.
Fitment
This adapter fits 1989, 1990, and 1991 (pre-intercooled) Dodge Ram trucks with the 5.9L 12-valve Cummins engine that do not have a factory intercooler. Compatible with all DPS S300 turbo stages for the 12V Cummins platform.
Does NOT fit 1991.5 to 1998 intercooled trucks. Those trucks connect directly to the DPS S300 turbo without this adapter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Only if your truck is a 1989 to mid-1991 model without a factory intercooler. Dodge began equipping 1st gen Cummins trucks with an intercooler starting in mid-1991 (the 1991.5 model year). If your truck does not have an intercooler mounted in front of the radiator, you have a non-intercooled model and need this adapter to install a DPS S300 turbo. If your truck has a factory intercooler (1991.5 to 1998), the DPS S300 connects directly without this adapter.
Look in front of the radiator. If there is an air-to-air heat exchanger (intercooler) with aluminum piping running from the turbo to the intercooler and from the intercooler to the intake manifold, your truck is intercooled and does not need this adapter. If there is no intercooler and the turbo feeds directly to the intake manifold through a rubber hose, your truck is non-intercooled and needs this adapter for a DPS S300 installation.
Yes. This adapter fits all DPS S300 turbo stages for the 12V Cummins platform, from Stage 1.5 (S362) through Stage 9.5 (S369 ball bearing). The V-band connection is the same across all S300 compressor outlet sizes.
The barb side of the adapter presses into the factory rubber intake hose that runs from the turbo directly to the intake manifold on non-intercooled 1989 to 1991.5 trucks. The V-band side connects to the compressor outlet of the DPS S300 turbo using the included V-band clamp. No fabrication or modification is needed.
Yes, some 1st gen owners add an aftermarket intercooler to their non-intercooled trucks. However, that is a significantly larger project requiring intercooler mounting, custom piping, and additional fabrication. This adapter provides a clean, bolt-on solution for owners who want to install a DPS S300 turbo on their non-intercooled truck without adding an intercooler. If you plan to add an intercooler later, contact Diesel Power Source® to discuss the correct piping configuration for your build.
