Turbonator® VGT for 5.9 Cummins Turbo & 6.7 Cummins 1988 - 2018

S300 & S400 Based VGT / VNT Turbos are NOT a modified Stock Variable Vane Turbo.

The Turbonator® VGT is a cutting-edge variable vane turbo technology designed specifically for Dodge Cummins 5.9 and 6.7 engines from 1988 to 2018. Unlike modified stock variable vane turbos, the Turbonator® VGT is brand new, patented, and patent-pending. Let’s dive into its features and benefits:

Features & Benefits:

  • Aerospace-Grade Variable Stator Technology: The Turbonator® VGT boasts ultra-robust variable stator technology, enhancing durability and performance.
  • Increased Fuel Mileage: By significantly improving spool-up and reducing drive pressure, this turbo may enhance fuel efficiency.
  • Built-In Exhaust Brake: The electronic model includes an exhaust brake, providing additional control during braking.
  • Increases spool-up 200 to 400 RPMs
  • Includes DPS exclusive 3-stage actuator
  • Low-End Torque and Horsepower Boost: Expect up to 200 additional horsepower and increased low-end torque.
  • Lower drive pressures
  • Can achieve better than 1:1 Exhaust to Boost Ratio
  • Wider Operating Range: The Turbonator® VGT widens the turbo’s operating range, optimizing performance across various conditions.
  • 6-pad 360 Degree Thrust bearing w/machined oil ramps
  • Clockable Design: It can be precisely clocked to fit nearly any 5.9 or 6.7 Cummins application.
  • Compressor and Turbine Wheel Sizes: Available in various sizes, including S300 and S400 options.
  • ETT (Extended Tip Compressor Technology)
  • 1st, 2nd Gen 3rd & 4th Gen applications.
  • Can be used on 6.7 Cummins (requires 2nd gen or 3rd gen swap kit)
  • Variable Stators (Variable Nozzle, Varible Geometry, Variable Vane Turbo)
  • Polished Compressor Housing (most applications)
  • Horsepower Gains typically be between 12%-20% rwhp, depending on truck modifications
  • Can be used as direct factory replacement turbo (on 5.9L Trucks)
  • Applications: Suitable for towing, racing, daily driving, and achieving lower exhaust temperatures (EGTs)
  • Optional Billet Wheel Upgrade: Larger sizes (66mm and above) are available with billet wheels.
  • Twin/Compound Applications: Can be used in twin or compound setups.
  • Exhaust Braking Function:

Stage 11  S472/83/VGT: 1650-1850 RPM's; 500-900 HP

*Turbonator® VGT/VNT Option

3 Stage Mechanical Actuator VGT Included

  • Improves spool-up by 200-400 RPM's
  • Improves turbo performance and output
  • Hold the veins better at every position throughout the RPM range

Hybrid VGT Upgrade - Allow Exhaust Braking

  • Improves spool-up by 200-400 RPM's
  • Improves turbo performance and output
  • Adds Exhaust Brake to Turbo
  • Exhaust Braking Function with the Turbonator® VGT - will always increase exhaust pressure while braking, however, Diesel Power Source does NOT guarantee a specific Exhaust Braking force as every truck and application will be different. We mainly recommend the exhaust brake (hybrid) option for trucks built in 2003 or after.

What is the Turbonator®?:

The Turbonator® is a high-performance Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) designed by Diesel Power Source. It is based on the S300 and S400 turbo platforms and features aerospace-grade stator technology, making it exceptionally robust and durable. Let’s delve into its key features:

  • Stator Technology: The patented and patent-pending stator housing can be independently clocked to fit various applications. These ultra-efficient stators significantly improve spool-up time by up to 400 RPMs, reduce Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGTs), and enhance fuel mileage.
  • Efficiency: When compared to sliding-style VGTs like the He351VE, the Turbonator®’s turbine housing demonstrates superior efficiency in converting exhaust energy into turbine power. Its overall flow characteristics are also excellent.
  • Performance Range: On the low end, the Turbonator® spools up rapidly, akin to a small turbo. At the top end, the open stators allow maximum airflow, performing like a much larger turbo. Whether you’re moving heavy loads or tackling uphill grades, the Turbonator® maintains EGTs while providing improved low-end torque.
  • Smoke Reduction: By burning more fuel in the cylinder, the Turbonator® minimizes low-end smoke, resulting in increased power and better fuel efficiency.
  • Pneumatic or Electronic Option: The Turbonator® is available in both pneumatic and electronic variants. Unlike modified stock VGT turbos, such as the Fleece Cheetah VGT or BD Screamer VGT, the Turbonator® is an entirely new design tailored specifically for performance applications. It has even received multiple patents due to its uniqueness.
  • Airflow and Exhaust: Based on the S300 and S400 platforms, the Turbonator® flows significantly more air and exhaust. This helps maintain lower drive pressures and allows for a greater than 1:1 exhaust drive to boost pressure ratio—an achievement that’s virtually impossible with other turbos.

** Turbos will spool differently in every truck. Injector size, timing, cam shaft, and other mods all affect the spool-up, the above table is the typical spool-up RPM's.

The S300 turbo for 5.9 cummins & 6.7 Cummins is also an excellent choice for the primary charger in a twin (compound) turbo application.

Whether you’re towing, racing, daily driving, or just need a stock replacement, this turbo vgt does it all.

  • Huge S471 Improvement! 5

    Posted by brodlr96 on Nov 13, 2023

I purchased a 2003 Dodge 5.9 with a Borg Warner S471 turbo. It hit hard when I was at almost 3000 RPM but sucked to drive. I got the mechanical Turbonator vgt. I expected about 300-400 rpm better spool, but I swear it's more like 1000 rpm improvement. The truck is actually drivable and I can tow with it. It would not tow befor the VGt. a big improvement for big turbos for sure!

I just installed the Turbonator VGT on my Ford 6.0 Powerstroke stage 3 kit. I already had an s300 turbo on the truck that wouldn't spool up worth crap. Since I put the DPS turbo on my truck I love this truck again! Hands down the best thing I've ever put on!
